THE WORD · STRAIGHT ANSWER · COSTA RICA

RAVE IN COSTA RICA.

A crowd in a clearing between trees at night with a few phone lights and orange lanterns hung from the trees

When that word shows up in the news here, it is almost always attached to an unpermitted party on a beach or a hillside that ended badly. What we are building near Jacó has a named ticket, check-in at the gate, a cap of 500 people and a cleanup shift the next day. Everything else we get into below.

What that word carries here

In nineties England, a rave was a warehouse or a field, a borrowed sound system and an address that went around by word of mouth the same night. Nobody sold tickets. That was the whole appeal and also the whole problem.

The word reached Costa Rica later and stuck to something else. Here "rave" is what the paper writes when two hundred people turn up on land that belongs to nobody, with speakers going until eight in the morning and neighbours on the phone. The headline runs, people read it, and the word keeps that face on.

So it is an awkward word to use. Among ourselves we say it, the way anyone who has been in this for years says it, but we understand perfectly why a tico mother does not love hearing that her kid is off to a rave on the 31st of December. If you are reading this to work out what to tell someone at home, show them this paragraph.

So here it is straight. A rave in Costa Rica, meaning an improvised party nobody organises and nobody answers for, is not this. There are people with first and last names who answer WhatsApp, a cap of 500, land that has to be left the way we found it, and doors and camping from 12 pm, with music moving through two stages from 12 pm until 3 am. Whether the word cleans itself up over the years or stays like this, we have no idea. We got it the way it is.

How to tell a serious night

This works for any event you get invited to, not only ours. Five questions, and if one of them has no answer, think twice.

  • Is there someone who shows their face and answers before you pay?
  • Is there an actual ticket, with a name and a receipt?
  • Do they say how many people get in, or is the number "whoever shows up"?
  • Is anyone taking charge of the rubbish once it is over?
  • Is it clear what water and toilets exist, and what you have to bring yourself?

All five fit in a text message. Anyone running something seriously answers them without getting weird.

What we ask of you

  1. Everything that comes out of the car goes back in

Nothing stays on the ground. No butts, no cans, not the folding chair that snapped at three in the morning. Bring two bags per tent and walk your patch slowly before you pull out. The cleanup crew covers the shared ground; your piece is yours.

  2. The road and the neighbours are not part of the party

People live in that area and they sleep there too. Drive slow on the last stretch, do not park where you block anyone, and turn your car stereo down the moment you come in. The thing making noise that night is the stage.

  3. Look after your own

Come with people who know you and know how you are doing. Drink water before you feel thirsty, say something if you are heading off somewhere, and if anyone in your group is having a bad time, find someone from production instead of waiting to see what happens.

The venue is confirmed: The Park at Ocean Ranch, exactly 13 minutes from Jacó. Final arrival and parking instructions will be shared before the event.

The uncomfortable questions

Is this a rave?

Depends what you mean by it. If a rave means low end all night outdoors and people who will not leave until the sun comes up, then yes. If it means a party that appears out of nowhere and disappears with nobody answering for it, then no. We would rather you called it a bass night with camping, which is literally what it is.

Is it legal?

We do not publish paperwork on the internet, for this or for anything, and we are not going to use this page to declare ourselves in order to anybody. What we do is answer. If the question matters to you before you buy, write to WhatsApp +1 518 351 6952 and someone from the organisation replies directly, with a name.

Can I bring my own speaker to the campsite?

No. One system plays that night and it is the one on stage. A rig competing from a tent wrecks the sound for the four tents next to it and adds nothing for anyone. Bring earplugs, not speakers.

How many people will be there?

500 at the top, and that number does not move because more people want in. It is the size this crew can produce well today: enough for the floor to feel full, few enough that anyone can find you if they need to.

You will keep seeing the word and that is fine. If it helps you explain this to somebody, use it. What we do not want is for you to turn up expecting one thing and find another. Tickets are on sale now. Choose your night and buy tickets for La Selva del Bajo at The Park at Ocean Ranch. The night from the sound side is at the bass music festival, where you will sleep is at camping in Jacó, and if small and word of mouth is your thing, underground festivals in Costa Rica covers that part. Helping out before or after gets signed up at volunteering.
