DUBSTEP · EXPERIMENTAL BASS · COSTA RICA

DUBSTEP
IN COSTA RICA.

Stack of bass speakers between huge trees under a violet sky

53 out of every 100 people who sign up ask for dubstep. Nobody prompted them. The form asks what you want to hear before it asks anything else, and that is the answer from the crowd building La Selva del Bajo, the one-night bass camp near Jacó. It is the most honest number we have about this scene.

53%

Dubstep

A clear majority with no help from us. The signup form asks for genre before it asks anything else.

30%

Drum and bass

Higher than we guessed when the form went live. It is the number that made us rethink the night the most.

17%

Weird bass

The slice that fits no box. It almost always shows up with the strangest artist names on the whole list.

Bass in Costa Rica, as far as we know

The scene exists. That first.

There are tico producers deep in low end, DJs who have spent years sneaking dubstep in wherever it is allowed, and people willing to drive two hours for one set. What we have not found, as far as we know, is a festival in this country built around only that. The normal format here is an hour or two around midnight tucked inside somebody else's bill, then the night goes back to whatever it was.

That is not a complaint. A short block makes sense while the general crowd is still catching up on what the genre even is. It just leaves whoever came only for that with two hours and a drive home.

That hour that always gets cut short is where what we are building came from: two stages used in sequence from 12 pm to 3 am, without rotating out of bass. It lands on the New Year's edition for a practical reason we explain in New Year's in Jacó: it is the one week of the year almost nobody has to be up early the next day.

There is a technical reason to run it outdoors too. Low end needs room. Inside a club, anything under 60 hertz bounces between four walls and piles up into mud you cannot pick apart; on open ground with trees around, that same frequency leaves and stays gone. What lands in your chest is the hit, not its echo. Add that sound behaves differently at night, with cooler, wetter air, and that what sits beside the floor is tents instead of a lobby throwing sound back at you.

A rig outdoors reads cleaner on the bottom and less brutal up top, and that changes how far back you can stand without losing detail. That is why people sit halfway into the trees and still catch a whole track start to finish.

A short bass glossary

What is dubstep?

Electronic music at 140 beats per minute with a half-time feel: the snare lands on the third beat and leaves a huge gap for the bass to fill. It came out of London in the early 2000s and has split in several directions since, from dark and spacious to outright aggressive. The one constant is low end as the lead, never as backing.

What is weird bass?

The label people reach for when a track fits no known box. Broken rhythms, tempos that line up with nothing, sound design closer to an experiment than a dance floor tool. It takes 17% of the poll, and it is almost always the group that sends the artist names we then have to go look up.

What is drum and bass?

A considerably older genre, around 170 beats per minute, with chopped-up breakbeats and a bassline running underneath without stopping. It started in the UK in the nineties and branches everywhere, from melodic and danceable to genuinely brutal. It takes 30% of the poll, the figure that has caused the most internal arguing.

What is experimental bass?

More a zone than a genre: productions where bass is the main material and the rest of the rules stay up for negotiation. Tempo does whatever it wants and the structure may never repeat. It is half the bill we are building alongside dubstep, and it is where nearly everything without a name yet ends up.

If you produce or mix

The open call is still running and takes submissions from producers, DJs, VJs, live acts, performance artists, and anything that fits none of those boxes.

Send a mix, loose tracks, a portfolio or a video. Any one of those four gets the conversation going; it does not have to be unreleased material or a final master.

Sending a submission is not a contract: it locks in no fee, no slot, no date. Any arrangement gets worked out directly with the organizers, and we publish no name until it is actually closed.

Along the way you vote for your genre and leave three artist names, so the three percentages above move with you counted in. If any of this leaves you with questions, message us at +1 518 351 6952 or on Instagram at @laselvadelbajo.

If that 53% holds once we hit 500 people, the theory checked out. If it does not, nothing bad happens either: the poll exists to find that out. What the full night looks like, map and schedule included, is on the bass festival in Jacó.
