DECEMBER MUSIC FESTIVALS IN COSTA RICA.

Main street of a beach town at night in December, string lights strung between palms and people walking

In December this country does not fill up with festivals, it fills up with people. That is the part nobody warns you about before you buy the flight. The month is run by school holidays, the year-end bonus and small-town fiestas, and live music fits in wherever there is room left. Our bass night lands at the end of all that, on 31 December 2026.

This is for whoever will be here those weeks and wants to read the month before building a plan. Names and regions for the big festivals are compared separately, over in music festivals in Costa Rica. Here we are talking about the calendar, not the lineup.

The month in four stretches

StretchWhat the country is doingWhere people goWhat it means if you came for bass
The 1st to the 15th Work is almost normal, schools are out, the year-end bonus lands and town fiestas start up. Not far. Most people stay in their own county. The good window for buying a tent, a sleeping pad and a cooler without fighting anyone for them.
The week before Christmas Offices start shutting and the highway to the Pacific loads up from Thursday afternoon. The first big wave heads for the coast and for the family house. Last comfortable moment to lock in a bed if you are staying several days.
The 25th to the 30th High season with nothing hidden about it. On the Pacific side the dry months are running and days come out sunny. Jacó, Guanacaste and the southern Pacific working flat out. Days for swimming, sleeping well and getting your body used to the heat.
31 December Dinner early, fireworks at midnight and music until late across half the country. Half staying home, half in a beach town. The Park at Ocean Ranch opens at 12 pm; official music ends at 3 am and campers can stay throughout the 1st.

We do not publish anyone else's calendar. Envision sits in Uvita, southern Pacific, with several styles of electronic music; Ocaso, on the house and techno side, announced its tenth edition in Esterillos, south of Jacó; Jungle Jam moves along this same coast with live bands. Their dates live where they should, which is on their own site.

Country dates that are confirmed

Not music festivals, but they move people and traffic that month. Checked on 26 September 2026; if anything changes, we fix it here.

WhatWhenWhereWorth knowing
Festival de la LuzSaturday 12 December 2026San José, from Plaza de la Democracia to Torre Mercedes on Paseo ColónNo floats this year: a parade of bands and inflatable balloons. Downtown streets close early.
Fiestas de ZapoteFrom 25 December into the first week of JanuaryCampo Ferial de Zapote, San JoséLast edition ran 25 December to 4 January. This year's exact dates are not out yet.
Tope and Carnaval de San JoséUnconfirmedSan JoséThe city cancelled both in 2024. Nothing has been announced for this December so far.
La Selva del Bajo31 December 2026, doors 12 pmThe Park at Ocean Ranch, 13 minutes from JacóMusic from 12 pm to 3 am, and camping until 11 am on January 2.
Fiestas de PalmaresJanuary 2027Palmares, AlajuelaUsually starts on the second Thursday of January. Official dates are not published yet.

If you need to get between San José and the coast those days, we can sort shared or VIP transport for the 31st.

Why the 31st and not some regular weekend

The date is fixed for 31 December 2026. Doors and camping open at 12 pm, and music moves through Pool and Main from 12 pm until 3 am on 2 January 2027.

The 31st is the one day of the year when nobody finds it strange that you are still up at six in the morning. There is already noise everywhere and almost nobody has anything booked for the next day. For a dubstep party that ends with the sun up, that beats any long weekend in April.

We know how it sounds when the people running the festival tell you when to come. What we do not know is how many of you will actually drive to the coast on the 31st instead of staying for dinner; we get that answer that night and not before.

Stretching it to three days was an option and we did not take it. Three days means three builds, three teardowns and a lineup split into pieces nobody sees whole. One night you can take from end to end. If this first one goes well, we will talk.

Building December around that night

  1. Land in the Central Valley

Almost every international flight comes in through the San José airport, and from there you get down to this coast by road in a couple of hours on Route 27. If you can choose, arrive with a spare day.

  2. Put in your email before your card

Tickets are on sale now. Choose your night and buy tickets for La Selva del Bajo at The Park at Ocean Ranch.

  3. Lock down where you sleep the other days

On the 31st you sleep in your tent, on the land. The days before and after are a separate problem, because in high season this coast moves fast. What the town feels like those weeks is in Jacó in December.

  4. Solve the last leg with actual names

You camp with your car beside you here, so who drives is not a small detail. Rental, bus, or a seat in somebody else's car: the options are compared one by one in getting there. Leaving it for the 30th is exactly how this falls apart.

What lands in our WhatsApp in December

Are there December music festivals in Costa Rica?

There are, though fewer than people picture. Several of the big Pacific gatherings fall inside the dry months, and each one publishes its own calendar. We only answer for ours: 31 December 2026, near Jacó, dubstep and experimental bass with no block of anything else.

Better to arrive before Christmas or after?

Depends what you want from the other days. Before the 24th the coast is looser and you get a table without waiting. After the 25th there are more people in the water and more street open late. To reach the 31st in one piece, either works.

Can I come straight from the airport on the 31st?

You can, and somebody will. We do not recommend it. Between the flight, immigration, the car and the highway, you end up pitching a tent with the sun going down and your body in another time zone. One buffer day changes how you feel at two in the morning.

What happens during 1 January?

It ends. You take the tent down, pick up your things and the land goes back to how it was. From there two roads: sleep nearby before driving, or leave straight away with somebody awake at the wheel. Campers stay until 11 am on January 2.

By the 29th of December there is nothing left to book on this coast, which is the whole reason this page exists. Sleeping on the land is covered in camping music festival, what the open air does to a long night is in open-air festival, and the town side is in festivals in Jacó. The country's whole week is in New Year's Eve in Costa Rica. Anything missing, WhatsApp +1 518 351 6952.
