JOURNAL · BEHIND THE BUILD

HOW A FIRST
EDITION GETS BUILT.

Crew unloading speaker cabinets from a pickup in a clearing between trees at dusk

Almost everything you see of an event is decided last. What gets decided first is never visible, and it is the order. This is ours, as it stands today, with the holes marked as holes.

A festival with editions behind it has the path worn in. It knows how many people arrive late, how much ice melts between three and six, what hour the campsite empties out. We know none of that yet. All we have is a sequence, and it turns out the sequence is about half the work.

Crew before anything

Before the land, before the sound and long before the bill, comes the question of how many hands there are. It is not a romantic question. It is arithmetic: how many people can raise a stage, run a check-in, keep an eye on restrooms all night and strike it all the next morning without anyone making decisions thirty hours deep.

That number is the ceiling on everything else. A huge bill with six people producing it collapses live, however good it looks on a poster. So here the size gets set first and the content second, which is the reverse of how it usually gets told.

500

People

What our crew can produce well today. The number came out of adding up boring things, not out of a scarcity play.

31→1

New Year’s visit

Doors and camping at 12 pm, official music from 12 pm to 3 am the day after. It changes the math on shifts, water, trash and crew rest.

The venue layout

A current festival layout is not available. See the venue location on Google Maps to find The Park at Ocean Ranch.

Why 500 and not some other number

500 people is the ceiling our crew can run properly right now. It is not an aspirational cap or a trick to make the thing look exclusive. It will sell out.

The number comes from adding up unglamorous lines: how many restrooms you need per person, how many cars fit into wooded camping before it stops being camping and becomes a parking lot, how much water has to be moved and how much trash a full New Year’s visit generates. Each one has a point where it stops being uncomfortable and turns dangerous. The 500 sits comfortably short of all of them.

There is a less technical reason too. At that size the floor genuinely fills and you still recognize people. By the third time you walk past the same spot you know who pitched a tent next to yours. That goes away fast as the number climbs.

What comes in from outside

Three forms feed the build and none of them is decoration.

The artist call takes mixes, loose tracks, portfolios and video from DJs, producers, live acts, VJs and performers. Sending something confirms no booking, no payment and no slot on the bill, and we put it that bluntly because in this world it gets misread often. What it does do is draw us the map of who is making what in this country, which a year ago we did not have.

The volunteer page has two shifts: setup and cleanup. Setup builds before anybody arrives; cleanup strikes once everybody has gone. Both shifts are the event as much as the stage is, and anyone who has built one knows which is harder to fill.

The invites are the most pragmatic part of all this. Whoever signs up gets a code, a link and their own QR card; every completed signup through that link is worth two points and moves the person up the ambassador leaderboard. At certain tiers there is credit for food and drink, plus a limited number of VIP upgrades. It exists for a simple reason: somebody who already listens to this knows five other people better than any paid ad does.

What is already decided

  • The whole bill is bass: dubstep and experimental bass, all night.
  • Two stages used in sequence: Pool and Main.
  • Camping among trees, with your car beside your tent.
  • The music does not stop until the next morning.
  • 500 people, which is today's ceiling.
  • It is the New Year's edition, outdoors near Jacó.
  • Everything that comes in goes back out, starting with the trash.

Lineup and ticket update

Most of the lineup has now been released. See the current poster and announced artists, including G Space and Disto. Individual artist set times and running order will be announced separately.

The venue is confirmed. Tickets are on sale now. Choose your night and buy tickets for La Selva del Bajo at The Park at Ocean Ranch. Loose questions are answered over in the FAQ.

We are writing this now because a year from now we will not remember what not knowing felt like. Once the first edition has happened, the story arranges itself and the whole thing looks planned from the start. It is not. There is a list of settled things, a considerably longer list of open ones, and a group of people carrying cabinets off a pickup to find which corner of the clearing they sound best in.
